Guatape Reservoir
We drove east from Medellin for over 2.5 hours to arrive at a marina on the El Penon de Guatape Reservoir. The reservoir was built for hydro-power, but it had its opponents as they flooded over a small town to build it. The marina and reservoir were at 6,200 feet elevation.
We boarded a small boat for an hour ride out in the reservoir and ended up in the small town of Guatape. The weather was beautiful at the time, and we had a pleasant boat ride.
For those fisherman and fisherwoman in my audience, yes, there were plenty of fish in this reservoir. I took the following photo from the same location as the above photo. I zoomed in for it. No, we didn't have a chance to fish.
We saw some very nice developments as we rode through the reservoir. It looks like a vacation place to me.
The Rock of Guatape was hard to miss during our boat ride. It's also called The Stone of El Penol by the next-door town of El Penol, who also claim the rock as their own. It's a granite remnant with a lot of local history. It is privately owned, but it can be climbed. It has 740 steps and sticks up 656 feet above its base.
Our guide asked if anyone wanted to climb it. Four of us volunteered and we were scheduled to climb it right after lunch. But before we finished lunch, the sky opened up and poured rain along with plenty of thunder and I suppose lightning. This was the only excursion that got canceled on our whole trip. Oh well.
Our boat landed us in Guatape. It's a small town and we had a nice visit there. But our boat landed a long way from main street on a floating dock.
